Mule Design worked with Stanford University Communications to redesign Stanford.edu as a distinctive and inviting front door to a dynamic and pioneering institution. The home page, and a compact set of directory pages, must welcome visitors and direct them to the best destination among dozens of separate websites.
We collaborated closely with the delightful University Web Communications team throughout the project. Working from our prototypes and documentation, they built Stanford.edu in WordPress and launched the site.
With the large scope of pages that would need to be rebuilt and talented in-house development partners, our work was to help define a system of patterns that could be used to build out the necessary page types while telling a strong visual story.
Eventually, higher education sites all start to look the same as peers piggyback off of one another. It was essential for us to create a design that would continue to differentiate Stanford from its competitors—even if they copied the interface exactly. Stanford community stories are highlighted prominently on the homepage because, while you may be able to imitate Stanford’s website, you can’t match its people.
